Rome’s bus network is extensive and serves both the city center and outskirts of Rome. Buses are a great way to get around the city, especially for destinations not served by the metro. Here’s what you need to know:

Operating Hours: Most buses run from 5:30 am until midnight. Night buses operate on a limited number of routes.

Tickets: Tickets can be purchased at tobacco shops, newsstands, and ticket machines at bus stops and metro stations. Remember to validate your ticket when you board. Drivers don’t sell tickets, and the machines don’t take cash.

Bus Stops: Bus stops are marked by a yellow sign. The sign will list the numbers of the buses that stop there.

Rome Subway Metro

The Subway Metro consists of three lines - Line A (orange), Line B (blue), and Line C (green), and they intersect at Termini Station, the main public transport hub in Rome.

Operating Hours: The subway runs approximately every 7-10 minutes, from 5:30 am until 11.30 pm every day (until 0:30 am on Saturdays).

Tickets: Tickets for the subway can be purchased at metro stations and must be validated when you enter the station.

Subway Stations: Stations are marked with a large red ‘M’ sign. Inside, you’ll find maps of the metro system and the surrounding area.

Finding Your Route: Subway lines are color-coded and easy to follow. Route maps are displayed in every station and on the trains.

You can find a taxi at taxi stands, train stations, and airports, or you can call for a taxi or order it via an app. The most typical way to get a taxi in Rome is to go to a taxi stand. There is usually an orange sign with the word “TAXI” on it, and there you should see white city taxis lined up.

Usual Fare: The cost of a taxi ride in Rome is calculated according to the city’s official tariffs. The starting fare on weekdays from 6 am – 10 pm is €3; on Sat - Sun and holidays, 6 am – 10 pm, it’s €5; and anytime from 10 pm – 6 am it’s €7.

Taxi Apps: One of the best taxi apps for Rome, Italy is “FREE NOW.” It’s widely used, reliable, and offers a straightforward interface for both locals and tourists. Other popular taxi apps include FreeNow, itTaxi, and also Uber.

By Taxi:

  • The journey takes approximately 36 minutes.
  • From Roma Ostiense, you can take a short taxi ride or walk to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations headquarters.
